If all of their planned books are as successful as this ne then welcome to instant history lessons and diversions! The book opens with an introduction of intent and content – ‘What most people know of George Washington comes from myths, legends and a few classes in U.S. history. While much of that information is interesting and even fascinating, the fact is that not all of it is true. However, that isn’t to suggest that the real George Washington wasn’t interesting or fascinating. On the contrary, the real life adventures of Washington are even more exciting and enthralling than the embellished accounts that make him seem larger than life. This book will reveal the true person behind the legend, taking you from his childhood through his early years and into his adult life. It will give you insights into his character, beliefs, passions and dreams. Furthermore, it will allow you to see the evolution of the man who would become a famous general, politician and even father of a nation.’The flavor of their writing is accessible and interestingly factual – ‘There is an old axiom that says even the greatest of men start life as a tiny baby. George Washington was no exception to this rule. While most only know of his exploits and reputation as a mature adult, the truth is that he had plenty of renown even at a young age. In fact, the very qualities that defined Washington the man were already clear in Washington, the boy. Truth be told, some of the accounts of Washington's early years seem very similar to the tales of such fictional characters as Huckleberry Finn or Tom Sawyer. With an equal love for sports, academics and adventure, it's little wonder that George Washington would become the man who embodied the ideals of a nation.‘Discussed well are Washington’s childhood and early youth, his life as a businessman, his pre-Revolutionary military career, his family life and his personal life. The latter topic is particularly informative – ‘One thing that stands out from all contemporary accounts of Washington was his large stature. This defined him for most of his life, as he grew to be over six feet tall before reaching full maturity. In addition to being tall, he possessed a broad and healthy frame. His physical strength allowed him to successfully engage in such pursuits as horseback riding, sports and other athletic activities, all of which only served to increase his robust physique. Even before he was well known for the strength of his personality, Washington was able to impress a crowd simply by walking into the room. Up close, Washington was known for his piercing grey-blue eyes, light complexion and light brown hair with a natural red tinge. His hair was of such fullness that he chose to powder it rather than follow the convention of wearing a wig. This only added to his rugged, natural appearance, which attracted the respect of the men as well as the interest of the ladies. Unfortunately, Washington also possessed a few attributes that caused him to struggle in certain areas. First, and perhaps best known of these, was his dental health. Although the myth that Washington had wooden teeth is patently false, it is true that his teeth were not in the best of shape. In addition to having false teeth from a very young age, he suffered dental pain during his adult life, which is the primary reason why his expression always seems somber. The truth of the matter is that Washington was a generally jovial man, but his dental issues kept him from showing the happiness he felt inside.’This is the manner in which or textbook knowledge of history is enlightened by History Titans. It makes a solid entry into how we view our past and our heroes. Grady Harp, October 18
GEORGE WASHINGTON: THE EARLY YEARS is a great little book that packs a lot of information into it's twenty-nine pages. With just six chapters, you wouldn't think there would be enough here, but there actually is, and then some. Beyond some of the preconceived ideas you may have about George Washington, there is an interesting man. The chapters range from the beginning in Washington's early life, his education and his ability with numbers. From there the chapters move on to Washington as a businessman, his military career, his political beliefs, his personal life and finally, his family life. Overall, this is a fantastic short read that gives an exhaustive overview of Washington's life. This would make a great study guide for quick reference, or just to have on hand if you are looking for something interesting to read. Highly recommend for an informative and fact-filled book.
